Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Ephesians 5:22-24 NKJV
I had missed the profound spiritual implication of this passage when I was caught up on my own personal jaded hang-ups with the phrase “submit to your husband”. But when my gaze focused on the words around that phrase, I had a thought... that to follow this instruction is actually an honor... because women uniquely get to embody this sacred call, model it through their own life, the call that is for the whole Bride, men and women...
And it is a call, an invitation, a choice. It is not forced. Will I choose to subject myself to Christ? To choose to yield myself to Him, choose to follow Him as He followed God in saying, “... Yet not My will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42b). To know Him as Leader and to rest in His leadership.
As a single in the spiritual sense, I had been leading my own life - asking for His leadership in the big decisions, but in the day-to-day doing what I thought best - what I thought He thought was best - without really talking to Him about it. I’d been driving my own car, and honestly, it was stressful. Would I let Him drive? He began to teach me to TRUST His leadership. I felt covered by Him... safe in the passenger seat next to Him as He leads the way, as He fully knows the destination and everything that lies ahead. I can just fix my eyes on Him, His supremely loving, joyful, confident, peaceful eyes, and just enjoy the ride...
During the epicenter of this lesson, it was actually quite funny how many opportunities came, in rapid succession, to practice living a totally different way. Would I stay flexible to God’s leading and surrender to His plan... or would I get frustrated and mad. Some tests I passed, some I did not, but He redeemed the ones I did not and oh, how I learned through walking this out! Continue teaching me more of this, Jesus!
